KEYWORDS

New keywords:

  •     neurodiversity: what is neurodiversity and how is it understood in different contexts? under which conditions it indicates differences in how people's brains develop and function, or becomes a reminder of being considered not 'normal'? Analyzing the neologism which combines the prefix 'neuro' with the word 'diversity', Andrea Valente critically discusses how, within the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) movements, the term has acquired a great popularity and how its situated applications can lead to challenge or (re)produce Otherness.

  • nostalgia: how is nostalgia connected with the (re) production of Otherness? who is the Same and who is the Other in the multi-layered construction of nostalgia? how can the emotional components connected with nostalgia serve marketing purposes or political agendas? which are the rhetorical strategies that shape nostalgia? Read Bilyana Todorova and Gergana Padareva-Ilievas new entry, and venture into the multiple aspects and questions that nostalgia arises.

P‍UBLICATIONS EDITED BY IOWers

Special Issue “Translating Otherness: Challenges, Theories, and Practices”

      https://www.mdpi.com/journal/languages/special_issues/50AA7OB8KD

Paola Giorgis, Ivanka Mavrodieva, Bilyana Todorova and Andrea C. Valente are the Guest Editors of this Special Issue that showcases micro and macro analysis of translated material, from word/morphological to semantic-pragmatic levels in interlinguistic, intersemiotic, and or intercultural translations of Otherness.

By now, two articles have been published online:

Amal Abu Zaglan, Zahra Mustafa-Awad, Areej Allawzi: "A Critical Discourse Analysis of Translators’ Narratives Affecting Two Translations of the Same Text: A Case Study of Orientalism”. The article examines comparatively two different Arabic translations of Said’s Orientalism (originally written in English) to show how each translation produces competing narratives of two cultures standing in opposition to one another, with each translation implying that one of these civilizations is unique and inherently competitive with ‘the other’ culture.
Languages 2023, 8(2), 152.
https://doi.org/10.3390/languages8020152

Stefania Taviano: “Translating Migration: Art Installations against Dehumanizing Labelling Practices”. Contrasting dehumanizing views of migration and bordering practices, the article offers different reflections and examples on how resistant translation practices, new languages and art activism can contribute to reversing dehumanizing practices by putting displaced people’s identities at the centre, and challenge the stigmatization of 'the Other'.
Languages 2023, 8(3), 221;

Charleine Iskandar Saad  (forthcoming):Between Domestication and Foreignization: A Study of How an Italian Film Remake in the Arab World Got Lost in Translation”. Addressing film remakes as a kind of cinematographic translations, the contribution discusses the Arabic remake of the Italian movie Perfetti Sconosciuti [Perfect Strangers] which had sparked controversy across the Middle East. In her contribution, the author displays a comparative analysis of the Italian and Arabic version to investigate into the dialectic between domestication and foreignization, and their relation with the (re)production of Otherness.

Special Issue “Decolonizing the University”: Victoria Odeniyi (from IOW Editorial Board) and Gillian Lazar have curated this SI on the multilingual and multimodal publishing platform called Decolonial Subversions. The SI addresses the theme of decolonising the university and the role of linguistic diversity in ways that are sensitive to different contexts and positionalities, presenting contributions from authors living and working in Algeria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia and South Africa. The Special Issue is available at  http://decolonialsubversions.org

WHERE YOU CAN MEET IOWers NEXT

14-16 December 2023, Turin, Italy: Participation to the Torino Conference Languaging Diversity. Languaging Identity in Changing Times: Challenges and Opportunities

https://www.languagingdiversity2023.unito.it/home

Paola Giorgis and Ivanka Mavrodieva will co-present IOW Dictionary as an alternative digital genre with specific stylistic features and entries that deal with the languaging of Othering. The title of the presentation is: “The Words of Othering and the Digital Genre.
Languaging, Identity, Diversity”.

Victoria Odeiyni will discuss how higher education policies and practices around language do not always reflect the needs of an increasingly mobile and international student body. The title of the presentation is: “Translanguaging as Creative Practice. What can we learn from our students about educational equity?”.

Mid-February 2024: within the activities and the webinars promoted by DiscourseNet (https://discourseanalysis.net), a team from IOW will run a webinar on How to write a new entry for IOW dictionary step-by-step’. The webinar will illustrate how working on IOW dictionary helps students reflect on discriminatory language and find creative ways to challenge and subvert it. Favouring the students’ participation in applying methodological tools of critical discourse analysis, IOW dictionary is a participatory and collective space where theory meets practice, so that it can also be utilized by scholars, researchers, and professors as a practical resource to train students in academic writing and research. Yet, since IOW dictionary can be used in different social and educational contexts, the webinar welcomes activists, educators, volunteers, artists who are interested to utilize or contribute to the dictionary in their fields of activity/work.
The exact date has not been defined yet, so… stay tuned!
