  • Following IOW presentation at the Sussex Colloquium on the Language of Covid 19: The Language of Covid: discourse analytic and sociolinguistic approaches to an 'unprecedented health crisis, University of Essex, UK. The title of the presentation was: ' "We are at War". The Military Rhetoric of Covid in Cross-Cultural Discourses' and is currently under review for Frontiers Publication.

 


 CONFERENCES

2022, June 15-17, Alicante, Spain: IOW Editorial Board conducted a Methodological Workshop at the 6th ESTIDIA (European Society for Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Dialogue): Conference Dialogue-shared Experiences across Space and Time: Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Practices. The title of IOW’s Workshop is "IN OTHER WORDS. Coming to grips with critical, creative, inter-/cross-cultural dialogue across space and time. A methodological workshop to explore the role of keywords in (re)producing or problematizing Otherness".

IOW Editorial Board has submitted an Abstract to IAIE (International Association for Intercultural Education) for the International Conference hosted by Hellenic Open University entitled Intercultural Education on the Move: Facing Old and New Challenges.

 

Online Conference 1-2/10/2022.

 

The title of the Abstract is: "IN OTHER WORDS. An online educational resource to challenge – and reverse – discriminatory language".

 

  

The 9th conference of the Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines (CADAAD), jointly organized by the University of Bergamo and Birmingham City University, took place from 6-8 July 2022 and was hosted by the University of Bergamo, Italy.

 

This year’s conference theme was (Critical) Discourse Analysis and the (new?) normal.

II International Conference on Discourses of Fictional (Digital) TV Series

(On-site Conference)

 

Departament de Filologia Anglesa i Alemanya at the Universitat de València and the Institut Interuniversitari de Llengües Modernes Aplicades de la Comunitat Valenciana (IULMA)

 

Dates: 19-21October 2022, in Valencia, Spain.

 

The Conference will focus on the representations of Gender and Social Inequality in fictional DTVS narratives and discourses, although we also welcome proposals based on alternative themes and approaches involving the study of TV series.

The I-Land (Identity, Language and Diversity) Research Centre launches CfP for a Special Issue titled Textu(r)alities: Semiotics, Bodies, Texts edited by Emilio Amideo (University of Naples "L'Orientale") & Rodrigo Borba (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and due to be published in an international journal in 2023.

 

Bodies, minds, and texts, of course, are, to different extents, the main concern of (socio)linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, historians, psychologists, queer theorists,philosophers, and literary scholars (to name but a few) who we invite to submit a 300-word abstract to be considered for inclusion in the special issue. Submissions should also include a 100-words bio and directly address the questions above.

Discourse, Authority and Manipulation in Multimodal Perspective (DAMMP 2023)
University of Lorraine (Nancy, France), 16th-17th March 2023.

 

The conference is open to papers which adopt a linguistic approach to manipulative discourse through multimodal analysis, focusing on English. Themes may include SF-MDA approaches, social semiotics or other multimodal approaches, focusing on official or unofficial sources,specialised areas of discourse (including, for example, political discourse, media discourse orscientific discourse), or the use of manipulation in genres of fiction. Other themes will beconsidered on merit.

 9th Explorations in Ethnography, Language and Communication Conference | IOE - Faculty of Education and Society - UCL – University College London 03-04 April 2023, 8:30 am–4:30 pm

The theme of this 9th edition of the conference in London is ‘Language, inequality and the everyday (un)making of alliances’. It follows a series of global crises epitomised by moments of spectacular disruption such as the so-called ‘2008 economic crisis’ or the ‘COVID-19 pandemic’. But far from representing isolated events, these build on long-standing processes, practices and experiences of inequality which are increasingly at the centre of more and more people’s daily lives.

 

The conference offers opportunities to exchange knowledge around ethnography, language and communication.

The Pragmatics of Cringe Humor on the Screen and on Digital Media.

 

This conference intends to examine the pragmatics of cringe humor in the English language on the screen (in sitcoms, TV series, filmed stand-up comedies, films etc.) and on digital media (in audiovisual, textual or multimodal forms).

 

Dates: 4-5 May 2023 at the Auditorium - Saint Charles Research Center 2 (Montpellier, France).
